Messi costs more than 250 million euro

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that a transfer of Barcelona right wing attacker and Argentinian international Lionel Messi (21) against the will of the club would cost more than 250 million euro.

If Messi would find an agreement with another club and Barcelona wouldn't be willing to negotiate on a transfer, the player has to pay the buyout fee of 150 million euro plus 16 per cent value added tax.

Messi of course wouldn't pay this himself but his new club would give him the money to pay that sum of 174 million euro. On that 'new club-Messi' transaction, the player should pay income tax (46%), which should mean that the cost of a transfer would in the end be 254 million euro°.

Excellent post, Zairus, excellent post, Tio. And very true; I think Dani has been overlooked this season, but only because of the brilliance of Messi. We are truly a lucky team.

These prices of football players make me sick and angry. There is NO chance that Kaka or Messi or XY worth more than a few millions. They're excellent players, no doubt. But, those guys don't know anything but run after the ball, no school, weak education. I think that doctors, lawyers or teachers (the other non-players too) are more valuable, and most important their contribution to society is enormous. 254M?! No f---ing way! While African children starving and dying, the rest of the world overestimate their players and clubs (City&Kaka).
We MUST wake up as soon as possible.

have you ever try to train b4 or play a full match for 90mins HOUseMD?? then you will know why they expensive

F*** it. The price dont match their value anymore. So How much should the guys who treat them earn, those who regulate their diet? These guys make us all happy buy no way worth these silly money. The earlier we wake up the better. What training? what 90 minutes? Its something they enjoy doing. If you cant be happy with £25K/week (£100K/month) then you need to train to be a Dr. I work in a hospital and i know what goes on around here.
But back to the buyout clause, it wouldnt stop the SHEIKS of this world if Messi or Kaka wants to move.

@A2J: you talk rubbish. I'm doctor and I know how much time I spent sitting and learning (and guess what - no-one payed me for doing it).

@noubarca: you're right mate

If you don't like how much players are being paid, then why don't you stop watching football? The only reason they get paid is because of us fans...

If you don't like it, don't support it!

This is nothing new. Here in the US basketball stars from the NBA and american football stars from the NFL get paid even more. I agree though that it's getting out of hand and I wish FIFA could do something about it.

Ofcourse I think he should be valued more than this! coz of there is no one like him in the world

@citizen: obviously, you don't get a point.

@HouseMD: what is the point you're trying to make? When 50000 people are willing to pay 40€ 30 times a season to go sit together and watch a bunch of grown men running around on a field, when an english-language blog about a spanish club can attract this many hits, when you yourself are one of the people most active on said blog, then your call that "we MUST wake up" holds no weight.

Also, if clubs didn't have to pay so much for the players, where do you think the gigantic revenues would go? to starving african children? of course not, but straight to the owners' pockets!

I'm not trying to directly attack you here, but you must understand, it's all right for you to rant about of the unfairness in the world (and I do agree, I work in international development), but if you don't like how this thing called that we call the "market" works then perhaps you should try to change your behavior or at least engage in something to help those in need instead of complaining.
