Looking for a cheap defensive midfielder

Catalan sports paper Sport claims that Barcelona is still looking to sign a midfielder this summer.

With Liverpool player Mascherano (25) and Arsenal player Cesc (22) probably being too expensive, Barcelona would now be working on plan B and would try to sign a midfielder for around 10 million euro°.

Because Barcelona manager Guardiola is considering to change the position of Yaya Touré (read more here), the club is looking for a defensive midfielder who could be a starter. The player, who shouldn't be from the Americas (because of the international games) or from Africa (because of the Africa Cup), would have to be tall (over 1 metre 90), strong, with good heading, tactical and passing skills.

Barcelona would have drawn up a list of three candidates: Ajax player and Belgian international Jan Vertonghen (22 - picture), Galatasaray player and Turkish international Mehmet Topal (23) and AZ player David Mendes da Silva (26). If those options aren't possible, Barcelona could consider promoting Barcelona Atlètic defensive midfielder and Spanish youth international Oriol Romeu (17).

Better promote Oriol Romeu or Fontas

Javi Martinez.. but come on people we are the best team in the world, this just stinks of desperation. A starter for 10m in this market? forget about it, we already have Busquets. To let inter rip us off so savagely and then compromise the rest of the transfers would be very uncool.

Guardiola can still use Marquez as DM and promote Muniesa to the first team. Oriol could get his chance to play for the first team squad during ANC. 10M is not cheap, but if they decide to move for some of these 3 players I'd choose Turkish.

Veronghen is great, good technique, strong, a fighter, smart guy, good shot, but don't really know if he's suited for the DM position in our system.

Bring back Crosas. He is not tall, but so aren't c+Cesc and Mascherano

I don't se any of those being a stater for the future.
I would like to se Miguel Veloso, he doesn't fit the height requirement and if thats what Pep needs for his team, then that what he should have, but Veloso is fantastic. He's a defencive version of Xavi.
He is priced at around 12 mil £ - 14 mil €.

If he is not an option, I would prefer Yaya with Oriol as a backup, I really liked what I saw during the U-19 EC.

You can't expect any of these three being a starter next season. Then you better think about moving up Marquez or Pique.

What's suddenly wrong with Busquets? You can play Toure higher and Busquets as DM. Don't really see the problem. He had such a great season and now they suddenly want a new DM and change the position of Toure.

This would basically mean Busquets becomes third choice for DM (after new guy and Toure) ànd third choice for the position next to Xavi (after Iniesta and Toure).

bring Jan Vertonghen .he is young and versatile.he can play in 2-3 positions,is a player of Ajax which follows same 4-3-3 formation like barca.he would be a hit in barca

lol barca is struggling to buy a dm due to lack of fund.

we will crush you 2-8 in camp nou this season

HALA MADRID

I'm from belgium. Vertonghen is good and a maybe a rough diamond but he isn't ready to be a starter at the best club in the world..

and why are we considering masche and cesc if Pep wants a midfielder of that hight?

we can buy crosas back next summer for 2M, this summer we would pay over the top for him..

yeah sure , crush us , lol , and on camp nou .
just one problem madrid boy , did'nt al ittihad kick your ass in the bernabue with christina ,and the euro flop bezifool involved .

I say play Busquets when Yaya moves up. He's done that superbly this season, but don't neglect Oriol. Keep him as back-up, he's still to young to be given a starting role. In 2-3 years with consistent playing time, he be one for the future.

well, these guys are way too young in my opinion which probably idicates a lack of trust for busquets, romeu, rueda etc.

i think if only gudjohnsen leave then the barçaboard should think about to sign a topmidfielder.
but please the money which was invest to get ibra is more than enough now!!

believe in our youthplayer!!
visça la masia!! faith in youth!

How do you know our our financial situation? We need one more CM/DM and we will get whoever fits our needs the best. You should worry about Wenger selling of your good players...

Vertonghen really is a good prospect, a true DM with power, height and a good mentality.
Technically he might not be up to the level required at Nou Camp. But he certainly has some of the characteristics for the job. Decent header, excellent positioning, good technique (not great), extremely powerfull left foot, top professional mentality, versatile and a decent physical composure.

Cons: probably pricy (10 mill? Maybe more)for what you get: a relatively unproven (though not inexperienced) player with some questions to whether he can excell at top level. His header is good but not worldclass and same for his technique.

I’m from Belgium and I like his mentality (little bit like Guddy, he just goes for it but not without thinking) at the national team. Van Basten also gave him some nice compliments last year (about positioning amongst others) and he’s a big part of new trainer (Jol) his plans for the season.

Vertonghen is fantastic.
a true leader on the pitch, great personality (smart too), big, strong, good header, good functional technique, great shot, excellent passing game, good positioning, not scared to kick somebody in the ground if necessary...
Besides being great already, he has the potential to become a lot better in the future.
He would do a great job for Barcelona in the shadow of Iniesta en Xavi.

Vertongen is young, can play CB, LB, DM and even AM, has great fighting spirit, works hard, .. But is just nog good enough for barca..

To madrid boy and aresenal mania:

1. Madrid will go bankrupt by 2012.
2. Barca will win both classicos this season.
3. Madrid's 94 million dollar investment will go back to Manchester for 30 million in two years when Madrid finds it impossible his wages...and he'll kiss the United badge and talk about how big of a mistake it was to leave but that he learned his lesson.
4. Arsenal will end up in 5th this season failing to qualify for the CL in 2010-1011.
5. Cesc will move back where he belongs.
6. Arsenal will continue to be a farm team for Barca. We send our players there and get them back when they're ready to take their game to the next level.
7. After Pep leaves Arsene will become the Barca manager.

You heard it hear first. Print it out. Tape it to your ceiling. Read it every nigh before you go to bed. It will soften the shock when all of these things happen.

P.S. To respectful Arsenal fans....I apologize for sounding sarcastic. I respect your team and wish them well (Cesc is still coming home though).

P.S.S. To all Madrid fans, respectful and not, I meant every word :)

To fellow Cule: Visca el Barca!!!!!!

I agree with you in some extent. We are yours farm land.thats why we will tap your player free of cost and will sell you the same boy for 50 mil euro.

and dude please take arsene wenger cause he is the reason we are trophiless for last 4 years.he will sell all your star player and will do great business in transfer market.he will destroy your team to make you profitable in transfer market.

bring arsene to barcelona

Xabi Alonso is heading for Madrid now, so we can rule out Mascherano I guess. Why can't Mascherano hand in a transfer request too? His wife hates Liverpool, so we should convince him to hand in a transfer request like Madrid does.

arsenal mania said...

@Anon
boy u dont have 35 mil fund to bring Mascherano to camp nou.you guys lack funding after winning treble.really shocking.Atleast arsene knows business better than your management

If Hleb does leave on loan and Gudjohnsen leaves for a reasonable price...

IMO.. Think it would be pretty nice to just have Yaya Toure remain at his position (DM), and probably during the African Cup promote a youth player if Busquets gets over worked...

and use the 10 mil and whatever from Guddy (IF Gudjohnsen decides to go to another club... just considering rumours) and use that to get Affelay =)

BARCA!

Listen little kid...just because you bought a copy of Football Manager doesn't make you a football expert.

If by paying 50 million i can guarantee a world class player without going through the process, i'll take that deal. We'll keep sending you our jewels...you keep playing them...stay in 5th place...then send them back to us so we can win a couple of championships and a couple of CL's....call me crazy...but I like that deal.

As for worshiping Arsene...not really...I just think he does a good job with absolutely no help from his board...The minute he leaves Arsenal you can bet your bottom dollar your team won't be playing in the premiership for too long afterwords.

In any case, keep posting here, the more hits this site gets the more popular it becomes...That will only add to Barca's popularity and quicken other teams demise.

Defensive MF- yes or no, but please get Angel Di Maria from Benfica quickly as backup winger..now that Hleb has departed..

Don't feed the trolls.

We need another midfielder. Iniesta is covering LW because we have no backup for LW. Then Yaya has to move up cover Iniesta/Xavi with Keita. Then we're expecting our defenders to move up to cover DM. When we don't even have enough defenders in the first place and our first choice CB is covering RB and we're playing with only 7 defenders including a guy who's completely unproven in Henrique.

When ACN comes we'll go a month playing Henry/Iniesta/Xavi/Busquets every single with zero cover for 4 positions. That's going to work out real well for us.

Jigga said...

I think Patrick Viera of Inter Milan will fit in perfectly into our plans. He is tall, matured, would be happy to sit on the bench sometimes, would come cheap and he is one of the best in his position, would also be able to tutor Busquets to take over fully in a season or two.

Anonymous said...

Word! Viera would be perfect! Another former Arsenal player!

Anonymous said...

IF and WHEN we decide to go all out for another midfielder (and not being cheap)

Why don't we consider xabi alonso ourselves..

He can play as a DM and as AM, he's spanish(saves some huges international trips), knows how to play with xavi & iniesta, and is a hell of football player..

barca nike said...

Promote Oriol

Unknown said...

Ya that's a good idea. Viera. He will be cheap and has all the characteristics Pep ask for, tho he's ofcourse will not be a starter due to his age. That's where Busquets comes in. Viera as Busquets back-up, if Yaya moves up.

Man I'm just salivating at the idea of barca playing with so many different strategies next season. Opposing teams managers/coaches will have a hard time predicting our line-up (that is if we can get Yaya to play CM that is).
