Henry (1): "We win or lose as a team"

In an interview with Catalan sports paper Sport, Barcelona forward and French international Thierry Henry (31) talked yesterday about the start of the season.

The Liga didn't start well, the Champions League is luckily another issue. The team is having a difficult beginning of the season?
When you're playing for Barcelona, with all the expectation and even more after having won no trophies for two years, people hope to win everything. We had a great pre-season, but against Numancia we didn't play well and we paid for that. When you have a bad day in the Spanish league, you pay. Then we had the Racing Santander game. Let's say it wasn't the ideal screenplay to start the season. Tuesday we had to win, score goals and calm everybody down. And above all we had to play well, and we did. It wasn't our best game but we saw an ambitious team and that's what the people want to see.

How about the start of the season on a personal level?
I started with two good games against Wisla and a bad one againt Numancia, which caused a lot of talking in the press, too much if you ask me. We win and we lose as a team.

You feel pointed at?
I just say that you win and lose a game with eleven players. Period. On Tuesday people applauded me and after that they can talk about what they want to talk about. But there are just people who seem to forget that you win or lose as a group.

You let Eto'o take the penalty. You wanted to send a message?
No, but those are the kind of things you need to talk about after the match. Leo, Samu and I, we're all recovering many balls. We play with a lot of movement. Everybody defends and attacks. As a group. And that's how you need to play.

This was the first part of the interview. You'll read the other two parts later on this blog with Henry talking, amongst other things, about his relationship with Guardiola and his role in the team.

All the right words from Henry. And he's right. Man, I am starting to believe that the new Guardiola attitude is contagious. I know it's early in the season, and there will be some rough patches that test the mettle of the side, but so far, so good.

...yes,that's right...it's the team that loses or wins...but everyone has to do something for it and performance good...the defenders have to prevent goals, the midfielders to create goal-scoring-chances and the strikers to score...henry don't do nothing (with respect)...so for me,he's needless (with respect)...would be nice to have a henry in good form, but what we have is only his name...how pitty...we need to bring a new capable striker to reward our midfielders and push them to higher achievements...ONE LOVE...BARCA FOREVER,EVER,EVER!!!

Well ponnykid, he scored 17 last season (20 assists). But people think that he sucks and should be sold. Go figure.

I do like the team spirit and fire in Henry's comments. That's something that you just didn't see as much last season. Lots of whining and "me first" nonsense from all the guys. It's early, but by all appearances, they're a team this season. Excellent.
