Club sources are quoted as saying that under the terms of the new deal Messi would earn a fixed year salary of 9,5 million euro, which would again make the Argentinian the squad's highest paid player ahead of new Barcelona player Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Messi, who would currently has a wage of 8 million euro a year, would sign the contract renewal after the team has returned from the tour in the United States. The duration of the contract of the Argentinian attacker wouldn't change and would see him stay with Barcelona until the summer of the year 2014.

As far as I care- he can get twice as more. He's the only player in the world every penny...

And Messi is only 22. Imagine by 26-28, when he is at the top of his potential, how much more can he garner. I guess it's worth it if we want to keep the best and prevent others from even dreaming of having him.

And another thing. I just saw via googling that at only 22 y.o, Messi had scored 80 goals from 161 official league, cup and European appearances. That's a ratio of 1 goal every other match. I just don't know if anyone else has ever done that in a top division of any league. He's worth every cent.
