[2008] Bid for Berbatov coming up

this post was published exactly one year ago:

Madrid sports tabloid Marca claims that, with the negotiations on Adebayor having reached a dead point, Barcelona is now targetting Tottenham forward and Bulgarian international Dimitar Berbatov (27) (read more here).

Tottenham is aware that Berbatov wants to leave and is willing to listen to offers coming in for the Bulgarian striker. Barcelona would be preparing a 30 million euro° bid.

Berbatov, who is also wanted by English champions Manchester United, would have given his approval for Tottenham and Barcelona to start negotiating.

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims that Guardiola likes the Tottenham centre froward and that Berbatov is still one of the candidates on the list to replace Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o.

good player........but not 30million euro good.........keep eto'o if that is your best choice. splash out on aguero (maybe even benzema) next year to keep messi happy. let aguero and messi run freely on the wings with henry in the middle.

I still think that a kind of delusion is going around in the media, Madrid biased media wants to calm public that we're not gana "steel" their Robinho, while Catalonian media, together with Barca directors by suggesting a long list of candidates wants to send a message to Arsenal that our interrest in Adebyor has cooled in order to reduce their asking price especially they know that we are the only club that would ask for him after Milan "swallowed" Ronie.
btw I didn't know that Barba is 1.89 m long!!

I'd rather have him than Adebayor.

This is an even worse rumor headline than Robinho's! I can't imagine Barcelona management walking around like a headless chicken where they are just throwing darts with names on a board seeing which one sticks. Berbatov is NOT what Barcelona needs nor what Pep is looking for at this point. This rumor screams of utter desperation - anyone to make us somehow forget about Eto'o - but it's just not likely to happen, even if Adebayor was signed, sealed and delivered.

I'll say it again, faced with the prospect of the "available" striking options either being too expensive, too short, not physical enough, too old, too inexperienced - Barcelona might want to start thinking about massaging Eto'o's ego in hopes of putting their differences aside. Even if Eto'o is not seen as a long term option it makes both practical and financial sense to hold onto him. Yes, I did say financial and that is given the fact that Eto'o could be sold for 15mil or less next season. But weighing that option versus spending in excess of 30mil in a desperate attempt to bring in a player who is not a good fit for the club, I would much rather hold onto Eto'o and take the 10-15mil hit, than suffer the 30+mil hit from a desperate, knee jerk signing.

I am surprised to hear all this Berbatov bashing. He was already mentioned earlier in the summer, it is not a desperation signing. Also, if he's not worth 30 million, why would a wise old man like Ferguson be considering paying that much or more?

I prefer Berbatov to Adebayor. Less of an outspoken ego for the dressing room, more of the Barca type the way he plays, mercurial on the ball, tall and has presence in the air and not afraid to release cannon like shots (even if almost all are from his right foot).

My preference is for Eto'o to stay and a cheap young tall striker to come in, sit on the bench and be thrown into the mix on 70 minutes if we can't break down a stubborn defence. But if Eto'o must go now, Berbatov is a risk but hardly the worst option.

30mil euro for him does not sound right, he is good but that's a lot of cash! if that's the case, he better be the leagues top scorer!

cojonudo...have you ever seen him play???..his technique, aerial threat etc are a level above Adebayor's...and a bit better than Eto'o I think....if he can do what he does at Tottenham...imagine what he can do at Barca...

Yes, I have seen Berbatov play on numerous occasions this past season. For the record I think Berbatov is a truly skilled player with extraordinary ball control skills and "touch". That being said I think we can all agree that he is a "finesse" player. He's not very physical, doesn't command an intimidating presence and is not as good a potential arial threat as Adebayor or Drogba could provide. And from my understanding Pep has repeatedly stated his preference for a "tall, physical striker, with an in-the-box presence that can also provide an arial threat and be a 'target-man' up front." I don't believe that fits Berbatov's description.

Personally I believe Berbatov is head and shoulders a more skilled player than either Adebayor or Drogba, but he doesn't provide that "ideal" fit that Pep's looking for (if we are to believe what Pep has been relaying to the press.) I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression. I have much admiration for Berba' and what he brings to the table - but unless Pep's going to do a complete 180 turn in his requirements for that position, I don't see Berba' joining us anytime soon - unless he is the ONLY option left by process of elimination.

OK we do not need to waste are time with Berbatov let Man Utd have hime... Barcalona needs to get a wold class striker with expierence and that able to play and score goals, we need a finisher so let focus on drogbra or a dream come true a player like Zlatan... we need goals not chances

no way. he is lazy player. his positioning also so bad, just wait the ball come to his foot. never come to the ball. it would be disappointment if bring him to barca.
