this is good, but I think earning a penalty is not an assist.

It all depends on the definition of "assist". There are 1000 possibilities. Here we use a broad one.
fan you're focusing way too much on the touching of the ball and not enough on the actual spirit of the assist. everything in soccer is supposed to be based on the spirit of the game. when you get certified to ref there are 16 rules (many subsections) and then they tell you to often use rule 17 which is where you interpret the spirit of the game.
