Txiki renews for one more year

Catalan sports paper El Mundo Deportivo claims, based upon club sources, that Barcelona sports director Txiki Begiristain has last week renewed his contract.

Begiristain, whoe previous contract expired at the end of June, would have signed last week a contract extension for one more year, until June 2010. This way, the next Barcelona board will have the free choice when deciding about the sports director after the presidential elecions that will be held in the spring of next year.

Some people may not be happy with this, but he did a pretty good job! Not always the fastest but perhaps that's not bad..

If he pulls this summer off, he's great.. He bought good, no Riquelme's.. Certainly if you take in account that you always have a mistake.

I think that Txiki has done very good job at Barcelona. I would love to see him to be sport director whit the next president.

We love txiki. If he was gone who would we bash for the slow pace of transfers :). But seriously this board Laporta Txiki and the rest have done a really great job and honestly i feel Laporta should get another term.

I'm not sure who's responsible for the signings of Keita, Hleb and Caceres - and also for not renewing Eto's contract so we wouldn't have the situation where in right now (if Eto'o had 1 more year on his contract we could have at least asked for more money and been more calm about this whole operation). If it's Txiki's masterplan - than I'm not to happy he renewd...

Keita's a good signing (they can't all play)
Hleb,i think we overpayed, but he was a good player and fits in our system..
Caceres: not a big fan

But anony, they can't all play, can they? They can't all be xavi's or inieta's, can they? be serious..

As every sports director he did good and bad things. His mistakes sure were less expensive than those of the previous board. After seven years, it's probably time to move on and get some fresh people in.

In the end, it's the players who should do it on the pitch and you also need some luck to get results, no sports director can do much about that. They should just try to create an environment where success is more likely.

I think his best move in those six years has been to appoint Guardiola.

Txiki deserves it

Uhm how can you criticize the keita signing? Did you forget his crucial goal at villareal? What about the role of LB that he played in the champions league semi final after abidal got sent off. Keita was worth the transfer. You cant dismiss him just because he hasnt played all of the time. A football team has players with different roles. Keita's was a midfielder to be in the rotation, not to be a first team superstar.

Keita was a very good signing in my eyes he contributed well when Iniesta was on the wing or injured.

Hleb and Caceres were awful signings. 30m+ for those two were insane, much worse than Riquelme who only cost 11m.

He was certainly allot better than Mijatovic! It's easy for us to sit here and criticise him but for anyone that has been involved in any 'high level' negotiations, I assure you it isn't easy.

In my line of work negotiations can take months to complete. You are dealing with egotistical people and everyone is trying to get the best deal for themselves.

I can only imagine it being 5 times harder for Txiki. Dealing with difficult Presidents, agents with bigger egos than players, his own players putting pressure on him about their own futures and then of course there is the small matter of 'Financial budgets.'

This isn't Football Manager. Txiki has done an excellent job and one people will only appreciate with time.

Do you guys think bringing Henry to Barca was easy? How about selling Ronnie to Milan? What about helping Pep mould a trebble winning team?

This guy has been fantatic for Barca and should be praised for his excellent work. He isn't perfect and made mistakes with the Eto'o saga but on the whole he has done wonderfully well.

You can't judge Hleb and Caceres after only one year. They have disappointed but things can still change.
